85 kW and 155 Nm becomes about 110 hp & lbs-ft? Even combining two into a V8 and adding 50% displacement, you’d have a pretty weak 4.8 liter (330 hp if it scales) :-(

Hyundai gets 140 hp out of a similar displacement/direct injection combo. I am not impressed.

The 1.6 FSI is over 15 years old.

This engine was developed in the late 90s and early 00s. VW’s 2.0 NA gasoline engine at that time had the same output so this 1.6. Of course you can get 300+ hp out of 1.6 litres today.

Its an engine from the Mk.IV Golf days without VVT, VVL or even a variable intake manifold, what do you expect.

Those figures are acceptable for 2002 and daily driving, at least in Europe.

And it’s way less reliable than that because of the damn timing chain.

Could be worse. Could be the aluminium block 1.4.

Less reliable? Because it uses a chain instead of a rubber belt? LOL.

Timing chains are quite problematic on FSI and TSI engines as well as in some BMW 4 cylinder engines.

No, cheaping out on tensioners is what’s problematic. And I’d still rather change a chain every 150k than a belt every 50k.
(These are assumptions as I have no experience with fsi, tsi, or 4 cyl bmws as I have no interest in any of the above, so take it with a grain of salt.)

There’s a marine engine out there that gets 109,000 bhp from 25,480 l.
Yes, 4.27 hp/l.
On the other hand, 5.6 million lbs/ft.

In theory timing chains sound great but not so much if they break after 10k miles on a new VW Golf with a 1.4 tsi.

Wow. Is this a common occurence then? I’ve had chains last 300k miles for me before.
I’ve also never been a big vag fan based reliability alone so there you go.

Marine engine is likely a diesel and it’s probably turning about 100 RPM to get such a low hp with that kind of torque. They need to get the RPM up to Ducati levels.

300k miles with one timing chain is kinda surreal for me. That’s reliability. VW reliability is questionable but most people who have had one in the past swear on VW reliability, especially in Germany.

A two stroke diesel and running at a max 102 rpm.
It’ll keep running at 102 rpm for decades though, which is thought to be a Good Thing in the marine world. That, and engines like this have very high thermal efficiencies.

Well I’m in the us so it is probably understandably different here but I’ve had two good friends with vws and both shit the bed at under 150k miles.
Meanwhile even my x308 jaguar (jag for crying out loud!) went 130k on the original timing chain and tensioner ( tensioners known for going bad) before I killed the HG by letting air in the system at about 143k. (I blame me, not jaguar fwiw)
My BMWs m30 is at over 150k on the original chain (just pulled the engine and checked everything, its all good, oil pump, chain, and all) and is the most reliable engine I’ve ever owned. Also my Mercedes (m103 powered) lasted until over 300k on the original chain before a piece of the head broke off and fell into the block, lunching the engine.

A lot of seemingly unreliable cars are actually reliable with good care and basic maintenence. There are exeptions of course. The weak point of timing chains really are the tensioners. Out of all the issues I’ve read on forums it were the tensioners that made trouble. Btw, my grandma in the US had a 2000 Jetta which was built in Mexico and it was utterly reliable.

I agree that all I4s were crap 15 years ago. Meanwhile Subaru had 276-305hp in the STI since the beginning of time (no DI or twin scroll!)

To be honest I’ve had more issues with things built in the USA (currently rewelding my GFs mom’s wheel chair ramp, made in Georgia or something like that, the welds are shitty) than I have made in Mexico products so I believe it. Fwiw Mexicans are some of the hardest workers I know.

I know 4-bangers were abysmal back then. My friends who bought “2.slow” VWs out of high school dreamed of upgrading to a 2.0Teee so they slap on a huge turbo and torque-steer past WRXs.
Never understood it...I refuse to acknowledge any VW engine <2.5 liters (4.0 if NA).

Now, now. I actually support trump over Bernie or hillary. Even though the media says otherwise, all he wants is for illegal immigrants to get here using proper methods. I truly belive that the media is trying to bring him down because the Clinton family has a lot of influence over media. And I have plenty of colored friends who agree (Oregon is the number one immigrant [illegal, and legal] state that doesn’t border mexico).
(I get that this is totally the unpopular opinion around here and I really don’t care, I was taught to stand up for what I believe in).
Also, Clinton is a lying bi*** who will do anything to get a vote. Fuck her.

Evos hadn’t really taken off (that would’ve been 6 or 7?), so it was mainly kids in FWD Eclipses planning 600hp builds. Me, I just wanted a VR4, and instead ended up with a 300ZX a few years later.

Lol, I was guessing at that.
Of course it’s efficient, it’s designed to run at a constant RPM for life. It also get 10 points for being a two stroke.

VW offered that damn engine up until a year or two ago for the Jetta. I’ve always quite liked the 1.8t though.

I always leaned towards Bernie because he is the most sane of them all but he never really had a chance imo. To be honest I’d rather have four years of Trump than eight stagnant years of Hillary. My dad’s not going to vote anyways.

Mitsubishi only started exporting Evos with the VI, even if a bunch had made it to the UK before, but HP wise the Evo and STi were always just about the same. That is until Subaru started to add displacement.

I actually agree. I’d rather have Bernie than hillary but at the same time I’m glad hillary won because it opened a lot of people’s eyes to how much their vote really counts (spoiler alert: not at all)
In my county Bernie got 99.3 percent of the democratic nomination yet he still lost, and he’s endorsed hillary. Nothing will ever change here in the US and thats the unfortunate reality until the next revolution which isnt happening anytime soon unfortunately.
We’re just like russia, an oligarchy, except russia is more open about it.
Again, it disappointed me, but I can’t do anything about it.

But it also has 73ftlb of torque at 9000 rpm. The Hyundai has literally more than double the torque and it starts at ~4,800rpm. The Duc motor would actually make the Hyundai slower off the line by a lot.

And I still say their engines don’t “feel” like they have the power they say they do. Their 1.6T in the Forte Koup turbo bumps up to “200" hp but that’s the softest 200hp out there. It felt like the 170ish from an old focus SVT, at best. Meanwhile, the 200hp MkV GTI felt a class above it in terms of power.
